FAQ

I’m having trouble connecting to my Slingbox.

If you can connect to your Slingbox using the sling website, then you should be able to also connect using Jaksta Recorder for Slingbox. Before troubleshooting further, please confirm your connection setup on the Slingbox website.

If Jaksta Recorder for Slingbox is giving you connection errors, here are a few things to check:

  • Make sure that you are not currently connected to the Slingbox via SlingPlayer or the Slingbox.com website. There can only be one connection open at a time.
  • Double-check that you are using the correct Sling ID and password. To find your Slingbox ID go to Sling support and log in. You’ll see all the information about your slingbox there.
  • Sometimes a firewall or security software can block the connection. Be sure to allow Jaksta Recorder for Slingbox permission to connect through your security software’s settings.
  • Jaksta must use a TCP connection to your Slingbox. It does not support UDP. So make sure that your router or firewall are set to allow a TCP connection to your Slingbox. This is the one exception where Slingplayer may connect and Jaksta may not. Slingplayer can use UDP if TCP fails. Jaksta must use TCP.
  • If you are currently on the same network as your Slingbox, you can use the IP address and port of your Slingbox in Jaksta rather than the Slingbox ID. Enter the IP address followed by a colon and the port (192.168.1.5:5001). Here’s how to find the Slingbox IP address and port. Use the IP address listed as Slingbox Private IP Address.
  • If you’re still having trouble, try setting up your Slingbox again through the Sling website and make sure that the internet viewing setup was successful.

If you’ve tried all of the above and you are still unable to connect we’ll be happy to help you get things worked out. We’ll need a log file in de-bug mode. Here’s how to send that to us:
  • From the top menu, choose Help, About then enable de-bug mode. Click OK.
  • Try connecting again
  • Once the connection fails, go back to Help-About and select Email Log to Support and attach the zip file it makes to a support ticket.
  • You can now go back and turn off de-bug mode.
Can I record the stream from a Slingbox Pro HD?

Jaksta Recorder for Slingbox supports the Slingbox Pro HD. However, Sling Media has chosen to encrypt the HD stream from your Slingbox, so you'll only be able to capture video at 320x240 pixel resolution. Make sure to set Jaksta Recorder for Slingbox to it's default settings and do not enable the optional recording settings. The encrypted HD stream cannot be recorded. Feel free to write to Sling Media and express your displeasure with their decision to encrypt the higher resolution streams from your box!

My recordings appear distorted. What can I do?

If you're getting a very distorted video, it's likely that Jaksta is trying to record an encrypted stream. This happens most often with the Slingbox Pro HD. For best results disable the optional recording settings and Jaksta will record the unencrypted version of the stream. The encrypted HD stream cannot be recorded.

How can I preview and watch what I'm recording?

It's easy to watch what you're recording while it's happening. In the left tree menu, highlight In progress, then right-click on your active recording and select play!

How do I map the remote control buttons?

Jaksta Recorder for Slingbox may operate your remote control just fine with the default settings. However, some devices may map differently. If Jaksta is not changing channels as expected, try configuring the keymaps for your device. First make sure that your devices are set up properly in Slingplayer or on Slingbox.com. Although Slingplayer is slowly being phased out by Slingmedia, it is a great tool to see your Slingbox information. You can download Slingplayer here. Once Slingplayer is installed, here's how you can find your keymaps and enter them into Jaksta's keymaps settings:

  • In Jaksta Recorder for Slingbox, click Tools-Settings then expand the section Remote Control Keypad Map
  • Open Slingplayer
  • Go to your Slingbox Directory. Select your Slingbox then the edit button.
  • Select the Information tab. Now place Jaksta's settings window and your Slingbox information windows side by side like this:

  • In Jaksta's keymap settings, the field One maps to the fourth character in the Key Codes string. The field Two maps to the fifth character, and so on. Use three digits when entering the numbers into the settings. For example, if the fourth Key Code says 9 enter 009 into the first field.
How do I find my Slingbox ID?

Each Slingbox has a unique ID. Jaksta for Slingbox will ask you for the ID of the Slingbox that you wish to record from. Use this documentation from Sling Media Support to locate your Slingbox ID.

Configuring Jaksta Recorder for Slingbox

When you first open Jaksta Recorder for SlingBox, you'll be presented with the main remote screen, which asks for your Slingbox ID and password.

You'll need to enter this information to record. Here's how to locate your Slingbox ID:

  • Log in to your account on the Slingbox support site. All of the information about your Slingboxes will be displayed once you log in.
  • Copy the Slingbox ID to the clipboard.
  • Paste that ID into Jaksta Recorder for Slingbox. The password is the same password that you selected when setting up your Slingbox.
  • Be sure to disconnect your session on slingbox.com before you attempt to connect with Jaksta Recorder for Slingbox. The two cannot be connected at the same time.
  • Note: The IP/Slingbox ID field can also accept the IP address of your Slingbox. We recommend connecting with your Slingbox ID, but if you'd like to use the Private IP address and port of your slingbox, you can do so. Separate the IP and Port with a colon like this (192.168.1.5:5001). Here are some detailed instructions on locating the IP address of your slingbox along with some other helpful connection tips.
Recording Live Streams

Once you've configured Jaksta Recorder for SlingBox, try recording live TV in one of these ways:

  • Click the Start button to record the current channel.
  • Enter a channel number, then click Start. Jaksta Recorder for SlingBox will change the remote TV to the channel number you specified.

Once recording starts, the Start button turns into a Stop button like this:

Click Stop to end the recording.

Conversions

By default, Jaksta Recorder for SlingBox will create an .asf format Windows Media file from your recorded video. Turn this into a different format automatically by choosing the format of your choice from Conversion Settings list.

Scheduling a Recording

Jaksta Recorder for SlingBox also comes with a scheduler. This handy feature lets you record from a specific Slingbox, at a specific time, on a specific channel.

Here's how to set up a scheduled recording:

  • Click Schedule in the left pane. The list of scheduled programs appears.
  • Click Add to add a new show to schedule.
  • Enter a description of the show, and the channel to change to. (Use -1 as the channel number if you don't need to change channels.)

  • Click OK to add the program to the scheduled recordings list.

Please note: Jaksta Recorder for SlingBox needs to be running for a scheduled recording to occur. If you close or exit Jaksta Recorder for SlingBox, no scheduled recordings will occur.

Settings

Here's a reference on the various settings you can use in Jaksta Recorder for SlingBox. Click Tools, Settings from the menu to access this:

Storage Folder: This is where your original recordings will be saved.

Conversions Folder: This is where converted recordings are saved. (This is usually the same as Storage Folder.)

Hide from task bar when minimized: Removes Jaksta Recorder for SlingBox from the task bar when you click the minimize button.

Enable sound effects: Jaksta Recorder for SlingBox makes sounds when a recording starts and stops. Uncheck this if you'd prefer Jaksta Recorder for SlingBox to operate silently.

Display final size in status: This makes the file size (after conversion) appear in the recording status display.

Change these settings if you'd like a different size or quality to be recorded. Jaksta Recorder for SlingBox uses the best possible recording quality by default.

If you have trouble changing channels, you may need to use different key mappings. • In Jaksta Recorder for Slingbox, click Tools-Settings then expand the section Remote Control Keypad Map
  • Open Slingplayer
  • Go to your Slingbox Directory. Select your Slingbox then the edit button.
  • Select the Information tab. Now place Jaksta's settings window and your Slingbox information windows side by side like this
