Technical Support for Jaksta Media Recorder
Recording from watchespn produces mp4 that is "not a movie file"

Recording from watchespn.com used to work fine for me, but I recently upgraded to OS X 10.11 and Jaksta 1.4.6. Jaksta correctly detects the video and downloads an mp4, and the size is about what I would expect (210MB for a 2-hour program), but the mp4 will not open in Quicktime or iTunes or Jaksta Video Converter. Attached is the log file and a small recording sample

I see what you mean, that file is completely corrupted. We are looking into it.
However I haven't easily been able to reproduce this problem from here, possibly they are streaming from different servers.
Can you go to the Downloads tab in the Preferences and enable "Always record HTTP" and "Always record RTMP". Then try recording from ESPN again. You will need to leave the browser window open with the video playing. Do you have better luck?
It's best to switch these settings back off normally, as they can only capture video if you leave the window open.

I tried the checkboxes, but the result was the same, "The file is not a movie file"

Sorry about that. We will have updates in the new future (probably later this month) which will upgrade the conversion engine to be able to convert more video codec. This may fix this issue.
If not, it's probably something tricky that the site is doing to thwart programs like Jaksta. We can often adapt to this too, but I can't give an estimate of how soon we would be able to update it to support this site. Sorry I'm not able to be of more help at the moment.

Thanks. So you think it is due to the site, and it's only a coincidence that the problem started after I upgraded to OS X 10.11 ?

It's hard for me to say for sure, as we haven't reproduced the same problem from here. If it IS due to a change in Jaksta, it may be an incompatibility with the conversion engine in the current version - hopefully the next update will fix this.
There is another thing we can check: are you able to right click (or Control click) on one of these files in the list and choose "Reveal in Finder"? It should show the file in a folder called "Converted". Up one level from this there should be the original downloaded file with the same name. Does this play?
